Project Description :

The Industrial Ring Road Project (IRR) is one of the Royal Initiated Project to solve the traffic problem within Bangkok Metropolitan and vicinity area.

The project provides a new road and bridge network linking Bangkok Port with the existing Pu Chao Saming Prai Road to the south, Suksawat Road to the west, and Rama III Road to the north.

The project is divided into 3 construction contract packages as follows:

Contract No. 1: Southern Area comprising of:

  • Bridge crossing the Chao Pra Ya River, at Phra Pradaeng District, Samut Prakarn, an elevated cable stayed bridge with main span 398.00 m. and 152 m. back span, top elevation 176.00 m. MSL.
  • An approach bridge with 22 spans and total length of 1,090 m.
  • The southern Interchange (Pu Chao Saming Prai Interchange)
  • At-grade road along the main alignment
  • Utility relocation, new utilities, Mechanical & Electrical Works

Contract No. 2: Northern Area comprising of:

  • Bridge crossing the Chao Pra Ya River, at Yannawa, Bangkok, an elevated cable stayed bridge with main span 326.00 m., and 152 m. back span, top elevation 163.86 m. MSL.
  • The main line bridge in central interchange with 5 spans and total length of 318 m.
  • An approach bridge with 31 spans and total length of 2,300 m.
  • The Rama III junction
  • At-grade road along the main alignment
  • Utility relocation, new utilities, Mechanical & Electrical Works

Contract No.3: Western Area comprising of:

  • An elevated central interchange with 4 slip roads
  • An approach bridge with total length of 1,368m.
  • An interchange at Suksawat Road
  • At-grade roads
  • Utility relocation, new utilities, Mechanical & Electrical Works
  • Landscaping for a central park (120,000 sq.m.)
  • A museum

The main bridges provide seven traffic lanes.  Pylons are made of reinforced and pre-stressed concrete with diamond shape and total height of 164m.  The foundation composed of Ø1. m. bored piles.

The main span is a composite (steel and concrete) deck while back spans are made of pre stressed concrete.  The highest deck elevation is +53.700m. at the center of the main span, in order to provide a navigation channel clearance of 46 m.

The 12 pairs of stay cables for each side of each pylon are composed of 40 to 80 T15S strands.

The approach bridges are pre-stressed concrete viaduct erected with the span by span method, on Y-shape columns.  It provides 6 to 7 lanes for traffic.  Typical span lengths are 67.5m., 48 m., and 36 m.
