Project Description: The seven run-of-river hydropower projects on Mekong mainstream resulted from potential study can be summarized as follows:

  1. Khone Falls Hydropower project with installed capacity of 4 x 60 MW
  2. Ban Koum Hydropower Project with installed capacity of 25 x 82 MW
  3. Pak Chom Hydropower Project with installed capacity of 13 x 114 MW
  4. Luang Prabang Hydropower Project with installed capacity of 10 x 124 MW
  5. Sayaburi Hydropower Project with installed capacity of 11 x 92 MW
  6. Pak Beng Hydropower Project with installed capacity of 9 x 108 MW
  7. Sambor Hydropower Project with installed capacity of 35 x 75 MW

The pre-feasibility study and initial environmental examination of the two following projects are carried out:

1. Pak Chom Hydropower Project The location of the barrage is adjacent to Ban Huai Khop, Hat Khamphi Sub-district, Pak Chom District, Loei Province, Thailand and near Ban Huai Hang, Sangthong District, Vientiane Capital Province, Lao PDR.

  • Spillways are reinforced concrete structures, equipped with 14 radial gates which are 20.00 m wide and 25.50 m high.
  • A powerhouse is located on the left side of the spillway with total installed capacity of 1,079 MW.  It is equipped with 13 bulb turbines and 83 MW each.
  • Navigation locks are located on the right side of the Mekong River.
  • Stream fishway is located on the left bank of the Mekong River.

2. Ban Koum Hydropower Project is near Tha Long Village, Huai Phai Sub-district, Khong Chiam District, Ubon Ratchathani Province, Thailand and Ban Koum Noi, Sanasomboon District, Champasack Province, Lao PDR. The project features can be summarized as follows:

  • Spillways are reinforced concrete structures, equipped with 22 radial gates which are 20.0 m wide and 25.50 m high.
  • A powerhouse is located on the left and right sides of the spillway with total installed capacity of 1,872 MW. It is equipped with 26 bulb turbines and 72 MW each.
  • Navigation locks are located on the right bank of the Mekong River.
  • Stream fishway is located on the left bank of the Mekong River
