Project Features:

Based on the system improvement program as recommended in the 1990 Master Plan, the MWA has implemented fifth and sixth projects since 1992, and those major constructions were substantially completed by September 1999, and presently those system facilities are in service satisfaction to the MWA. In the follow-up action on the continuation of the system improvement, the MWA planned to implement in or around 1997 after the cabinet approved this project, however, the project was postponed due to the economic crisis, which hit through the Asian Countries in 1996-1997.

In 1999, upon very quick recovery of Thailand, corporation loan negotiation was concluded and the Loan Agreement for 24th JBIC Loan was signed in September 1999. Followed by this stance, the MWA confirmed to proceed with implementation of the project which includes:

(1) expansion of both Bang Khen and Maha Sawat Water Treatment Plants for increasing each production capacity of 400,000 CMD

(2) expansion of Sam Lae Raw Water Pump Station

(3) Bang Khen Transmission Pump Station

(4) Transmission Tunnel to Tha Phra Pump Station from Maha Sawat, and

(5) Furnishing Pumping Equipment for the existing and new pump stations. TEAM Consulting Engineering and Management Co., Ltd. and its associate - Nihon Suido Consultants Co., Ltd. were employed by the MWA to provide the construction supervision services of the project, which covers the following components.

  • Construction of raw water pumping station (accommodation 3 units of 500 cubic meter minute (CMM) pump) and related works at Sam Lae pumping station.
  • Construction of water treatment facilities of 400,000 cubic metres per day, and related works at Bang Khen water treatment plant.
  • Construction of a treatment plant of 400,000 cubic metres per day, and related works at Maha Sawat water treatment plant.
  • Supply and installation of pumping equipments in Sam Lae raw water pumping station, Bang Khen raw water pumping station,  Bang Khen water transmission pumping station, Phet Kasem water distribution pumping station, Maha Sawat water transmission pumping station, and Maha Sawat raw water pumping station.
  • Supply and installation of 7,500 KVA electrical substation at Maha Sawat water treatment plant.
  • Construction of water transmission pumping station No.3, Surge Tower No.3 and related works at Bang Khen water Treatment Plant.
  • Construction of transmission tunnel with dia. of 2,500 mm along the Phet Kasem Road from Nakhon Indra Road to Tha Phra pumping station (approx. 2.4 km).
  • Other works including rehabilitation of pipes and related works in the pilot project area.

By completion of this project, the production capacities of Bang Khen and Maha Sawat water treatment plants become 3,600,000 CMD and 1,200,000 CMD respectively. And,  the total water supply production capacity of the MWA including Sam Sen and Thonburi Plants would reach 5.5 million CMD.
