Project description: The South contract of the Bangkok MRTA comprises an 11km length of twin tunnels, (including sections of cut-and-cover tunnel), nine underground stations, two khlong bridges and various other structures.
Initially commissioned to produce a tender design, the SMC-Maunsell led design team produced architectural, civil and electrical & mechanical designs for the stations, the cut andcover sections, driven running tunnels, intervention shafts, passenger access tunnels / buildings and ventilation shaft/buildings.
The predominant factors influencing the design are the high groundwater table, the proximity of adjacent buildings and the soft alluvial clays through which the structures are to be excavated.
The design commission was led by Sindhu Maunsell Consultants with the civil/structural design and geotechnical expertise being provided by the UK and Australian groups.
