Runways, Taxiways and Aircraft Apron

The design works SEATEC has undertaken in the consultant consortium include ground improvement, electrical works for the airport, visual aids system works, mechanical system works, and air conditioning works. SEATEC had worked closely and responsible severally in the consortium gaining technology transfer and various experiences in the airport designing including worthwhile technological knowledge and compilation of various design works.

All works were completed neatly and were highly praised by NBIA.  In the pavement design the foundation below the ground level needed improvement due to presence of soft soil and Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVD) were inserted to the depth of 10 m. Then 5 m thick sand/ rock surcharge was laid to squeeze out the water from the soft soil to have a consolidation settlement of about 1.60 m in 6 months period.

After the completion of consolidation settlement, the ground become strengthened by about 2 to 4 times and then the ground is compacted and filled up with 80 cm thick dense sand layer, leveled and overlaid by 72 cm thick sand cement (cement treated material) to be the base course. Then 33 cm thick Bituminous Material is laid for the surface to receive the aircraft traffic.

As Bituminous Materials could be damaged at the aircrafts apron by the oil spill, Bituminous Material was replaced by 45 cm thick concrete for an area of 4.50 m x 5.00 m.
