Project Description: Red Line Rail System: Bang Sue-Hua Lamphong-Makkasan-Hua Mak Section is part of the Red Line Rail System which is one of the five major mass rapid systems in Bangkok in the cabinet’s resolution on November 7, 2006.

The Red Line Rail System consists of three sections Bang Sue-Taling Chan Section, Bang Sue-Rangsit Section, and Bang Sue-Hua Lamphong-Makkasan-Hua Mak Section. The whole system will provide transportation service for commuters traveling by rail system connecting Bangkok and surrounding areas as well as nearby provinces. When completed, it will promote the rail transportation and reduce traffic congestion.

The Bang Sue-Hua Lamphong-Makkasan-Hua Mak Section will connect the North-South rail system to East-West rail system at two major transportation hubs, Phahon Yothin transportation hub (Bang Sue) and  Makkasan City Air Terminal (Makkasan). It also link to existing BTS SkyTrain at Phayathai Station  and future Orange Rail System- (Bangkapi

- Bang Bumru). These connections turns this section to be the core of the system.

As the route of this section is passing through historic sites in the Rattanakosin area the underground construction was selected in designing most of the track supporting structures and stations in order to maintain the clear prospect. The underground structure is cut and cover construction which consists of diaphragm walls on both side of station and slabs at concourse and platform level as struts. 

Normally base slab will be at approximately 8 m. below the ground surface except at Ratchawithi station which is approximately 18 m. Design of the underground construction has to consider sequence in construction as internal forces in diaphragm wall in each step of excavation will be changed and the location of critical section will differ from the final excavation stage. The construction area of all underground stations is approximately  40,000 square meters.

There are two at grade stations at Hua Lumphong and Yotse with the total floor area of approximately 15,000 square meters. Prestressed concrete girder on post-tensioned cross beam was used in Yotse Station.
